Lots to Sea and Do

Located on the scenic river foreshore, in the heart of Devonport’s beautiful Bluff Precinct, the Bass Strait Maritime Museum offers an immersive journey into the region’s rich seafaring past.

Welcome to the Bass Strait Maritime Museum

Our museum is dedicated to uncovering the secrets of the infamous Bass Strait through a variety of engaging and educational exhibits.

Within the heritage-listed harbour master’s cottage, circa 1920 you’ll explore an impressive collection of ship models, artefacts, and exhibits, connecting you to a treasure trove of Devonport’s maritime and local history.

Delve into Tasmania’s Aboriginal maritime culture through our ‘First Mariners – Sea Country People’ exhibition. Discover Uncle Rex Greeno’s traditionally crafted paperbark ningher (canoe), offering a glimpse into the watercraft that once connected coastal communities. Admire Aunty Lola Greeno’s exquisite shell necklaces and hear the powerful storytelling of Dave mangenner Gough, revealing the enduring bond between Tasmania’s First Nations people and the sea.

The museum’s modern wing, designed by Jaws Architects and winner of the People’s Choice award at the Tasmanian Architecture Awards, houses interactive displays that let you get hands-on and bring Devonport’s maritime history to life. Take the helm at Australia’s premier ship simulator, recently relaunched, and enjoy an unforgettable experience as you captain the SS Woniora circa 1920, navigating through Devonport’s Mersey River and out to the wilds of Bass Strait.
