Our First Mariners Sea Country People

In October 2024, we unveiled a groundbreaking new exhibition, highlighting the maritime heritage of North-west Tasmania’s Aboriginal community. Featuring a model paperbark ningher/canoe by Uncle Rex Greeno and traditional palawa shell necklaces by Aunty Lola Greeno and engaging storytelling from Dave mangenner Gough, this new exhibition showcases the profound connection between Tasmania’s First Nations people and Tasmania’s waters.

This exhibit has been mapped to the current Australian Schools Curriculum and linked to The Orb via QR code for the provision of teaching resources. The exhibition is supported by the Maritime Museums of Australia Project Support Scheme and Tasports and aims to educate and inspire visitors about Tasmania’s rich First Nations maritime history.
